VHF Marine Radio Short Range Certificate

Background Information
The Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the minimum qualification required by law to control
the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British
flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. This includes both fixed and hand held
equipment using International channels.
Course topics include:
- the basics of radio operation
- the correct frequencies (channels) to be used
- distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures
- Digital Selective Calling (DSC) using real (but modified) radios
- Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
- Satellite and Radar distress devices
- Automatic Identification System (AIS)
Course delivery is in the form of screen based material and practical radio use.
Pre-course work
This is required and will be advised to you before the course. It takes the form of reading the course book and completing a question/answer sheet.
Course Times
The course starts at 09:00 and finishes around 16:30.
Discounted rate for LSC members = £95 per person to include:
- £25 course fee
- £60 payable directly to the RYA
- £10 for the RYA course pack including the required book and a certificate
Exam
The course is followed by an exam conducted by an independent examiner. The exam takes an hour to an hour and a half and 4
candidates can be examined at a time. If there are more than 4 on the course then more than one exam session will take place.
For those in the second session there will be an interval between the course ending and the exam session starting.
You will need:
- your course book
- your pre course question/answer sheets
- passport sized photograph (one)
- a means of paying £60 to the examiner for the exam and licence fee. This can be by credit/debit card or cheque payable to the RYA
- glasses (if you need them)!
